JJ Fish & Chicken — we fry fresh

Our story

A tradition of flavor

From a Chicago neighborhood fish market to the communities we serve today.

1982

Where our story begins.

The history of the broader JJ Fish brand, born in Chicago and carried forward in Wisconsin.

A Tradition of Flavor Since 1982

On March 8, 1982, James J. Green set out to pursue the American Dream. With a passion for great food and a determination to succeed, he founded JJ Fish, a small fish market in Chicago, Illinois.

What began as a simple idea quickly became something special. Customers could purchase fresh fish and have it fried for just $1.00 using Green's signature batter. His dedication to quality, flavor, and customer satisfaction helped transform a small neighborhood business into a growing restaurant brand.

From One Store to Over 130 Restaurants

The original JJ Fish opened on 35th Street and Martin Luther King Drive in Chicago, Illinois.

In less than 20 years, JJ Fish expanded to more than 130 restaurants, including 90 locations in Chicago alone. What started as a single neighborhood fish market grew into a recognizable name known for its crispy fried fish, flavorful chicken, and generous portions.

Throughout this growth, the tradition remained the same. The original signature batter continued to be a defining part of JJ Fish, even as the menu expanded to include new favorites and the business grew to serve both dine-in and carryout customers.

Proud to Serve Our Communities

Today, JJ Fish & Chicken continues the tradition that James J. Green started in 1982: serving delicious food with dedication, care, and a commitment to quality.

Here in Wisconsin, we're proud to carry on that legacy by serving our communities the crispy fish, flavorful chicken, and classic favorites that customers have come to know and love.

From our beginnings in Chicago to our restaurants across Milwaukee, our commitment remains the same: great food, great flavor, and great service.
